As we continue to look back at Emme’s Island Moments 15th Anniversary, on this next installment we check in with former guests, Chef Alan Wong of Alan Wong’s Restaurant, Chef Roy Yamaguchi of Roy’s and Wine Sommelier Chuck Furuya. Also, Alan tasee what it took to have the first White House Luau on the Lawn and revisit President Barack Obama’s segment of “With Island Roots”, an Island Moments piece, which received a 2009 Telly Award.

CHEF ALAN WONG IN D.C.

It’s been 15 years since Chef Wong started his culinary climb up the food industry ladder in the islands and in the nation. He talks about his hits, misses and the ultimate experience: cooking for President Obama’s Congressional picnic in our Nation’s Capitol. Wong was part of a historical first – bringing an island moment luau celebration to the White House.

CHEF ROY YAMAGUCHI ON TOP CHEF MASTERS
Chef Roy Yamaguchi recently celebrated his 20th year with Roy’s Restaurants and now boasts over 33 restaurants in 4 different time zones, including 25 in the Continental US, 6 in Hawaii, 1 in Japan and 1 in Guam. Roy reflects on his life as a father, restaurateur, businessman and his recent appearance on Top Chef Masters.

CHUCK FURUYA HONORED BY LUPUS HAWAII

Hawaii’s first local boy wine sommelier and one of the driving forces behind Hawaii Regional Cuisine and the concept of “Buy Local” was recently honored by Lupus Hawaii. We look back at some of our favorite moments on the road with Chuck and meet Nunzio Alioto of San Francisco who inspired Furuya to get into the wine world.

EMME INC. WINS NATIONAL TELLY AWARD!
Before he was President, we featured a segment on island born Barack Obama titled, “With Island Roots.” The piece won a national Telly Award this year and by popular demand, we air an encore presentation of the segment. Emme talks to Obama’s closest friends and family members, which include his sister Maya Soetoro Ng and Georgia McCauley, who knew Obama’s mother. Obama’s high school and lifelong friends, former Punahou classmates Bobby Titcomb and Michael Ramos, talk about Obama’s early years in the islands and share their insight into Hawaii’s first island born President of the United States.
