Emme’s Tomimbang’s  show about Hawaii’s healing spirit in the wake of the September 11th attacks--"Hawaii To New York: The Aloha Spirit Lives"--first aired on August 22, 2002. Now, on the five-year anniversary of the events of September 11th, a re-edited version of the program will air, along will follow-up features on some of the key stories in the show. The updated version of the show is titled “9-11 Remembered: Five Years Past”, and will be seen on KHON2, Monday, September 11, at 9 pm.

The program traced the special connections between Hawaii and New York and how they contributed to the 9-11 recovery effort. At the heart of the show was an expedition initiated by "Island Moments" executive producer/host Emme Tomimbang to bring the Hawaii-based singing group DisGuyz to Long Island to perform "Our Nation In Song" for Lauren and Kaitlynn Meisenheimer's tribute ballet to their late firefighter father. The performance brought the Aloha Spirit to New York in a big way.

The show also looked at the men of Rescue 3, a fire and collapse unit in the Bronx that lost eight men in the World Trade Center tragedy. One of these men was Ray Meisenheimer, father of Lauren and Kaitlynn Meisenheimer. The commander of Rescue 3, Captain Ralph Tiso, expressed his gratitude to Hawaii for a state-sponsored Hawaiian vacation for over 600 New York firefighters, police, port-authority workers and their families.

Also featured in the original show: Punahou graduate Jim Simpson launches the first 9-11 play, "The Guys," with his actress wife Sigourney Weaver; Hawaii Red Cross volunteer Esther Lau's tours of duty at Ground Zero; a concert of Aloha at Rescue 3 in the Bronx, featuring former Miss Hawaii Melissa Short.

The show also brought us the stories of eight Hawaii residents who lost their lives on September 11th:  Heather Ho, Rich Y.C. Lee, Maile Hale, Christine Snyder, Georgine Corrigan, and Patricia Maile Pitchford Colodner.

In the update segments, Capt. Tiso, now retired from the New York City Fire Department, takes us on a tour of Ground Zero today, and updates us on the status of the September 11th memorial project, the families of some of men lost from Rescue 3, and reactions to the Oliver Stone film “World Trade Center”. He also tells us what his healing process has been like over the past five years and perspectives he has gained since then.

Also in the update: Hawaii-resident and Red Cross volunteer at Ground Zero Esther Lau; Hawaii Red Cross Disaster Mental Health Volunteer Ken Lee (who also served at Ground Zero); Ian Pescaia, who lost his newlywed wife Christine Snyder on United Flight 93; and Elan Markos, writer of the DisGuyz September 11th tribute song “Our Nation in Song.”

Five years after one of the greatest tragedies in the history of our country, it is time to reflect on what he have learned about the world and ourselves. Emme’s Islands Moments’ “9-11 Remembered: Five Years Past”, attempts to do that, through heart felt remembrances and commentary by some whose lives were forever touched by the events of September 11th.

The show is hosted, produced, and co-written by Emme Tomimbang, with Robert Pennybacker as director/co-writer.  It airs on Monday, September 11, 2006, 9 pm, on KHON 2.
